A Long Overdue Update…

OK, It’s been a while… I know:(  I promise to be more diligent with updates in the coming weeks.

It was an amazing musical summer!  When most musicians suffer from venues shutting down live music in the off-season, I have been blessed with relationships with many live music venues and Parrot Head clubs that have kept me just as busy as ever!  Of course, I love playing at my “home base”, Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armand’s Circle.  I get to play tropical music in one of the most desirable tourist destinations on the west coast of Florida. The staff at Cha Cha’s is like family and the recently updated menu makes it an absolute “Must Do” if you’re on vacation in this area.  Of course, the fact that the place is also packed with its fair share of locals at any given time, is testimony to the fact that Cha Cha Coconuts is the place to be!

Other places you’ll find me in my hometown area include the Dockside Waterfront Grill at Marker 4 in Venice, Captain Jack’s in Tarpon Springs, Hurricane Charley’s in Punta Gorda, Gilligan’s Island Grill on Siesta Key, and the Paradise Grill in Nokomis.  All of these terrific venues offer a tiki themed style with terrific food and drink, and of course, me! Please check out my Tour Dates page on this site to see where you can come and sing along with me.

A huge thanks to the Parrot Head Clubs that continue to be supportive of my music and invite me to play at so many cool events that have my musician friends jealous!  The Sarasota Bay PHC, Tampa Bay Parrot Head Club, Parrot Heads of Central Florida (Orlando), the Heartland LakeShark Parrot Head Club (Lake Placid), The Villages PHC, Parrot Heads in Natural Settings (Jacksonville), and the Space Coast PHC (Greater Brevard County area) are just some of the Clubs that have had me perform this year and there are many more to come on the schedule.

Although there’ll be much more to mention on this subject in the near future, I must tell you about Cabana Dogs, which is my latest band project with guitarist/bassist/producer Jimi C.  We are a four piece Trop Rock Party Band that promises to keep you on your feet from the very first strum and hit, until the venue closes!  We can also modify to a duo or a trio, based on your needs.  Check out http://www.cabanadogs.com for all information on this project.  We are thrilled to be scheduled to play several Parrot Head Holiday Parties and Birthday Parties.

Also, be sure to check us out at, the award winning, Music on the Bay Festival at Whiskey Joe’s in Tampa during the first weekend in March of 2018.  The Cabana Dogs are the house band for the MOTB VIP Party on Thursday night, March 1st, 2018.  We’ll be jamming many of our own tunes and then, bringing up all of the stars of Music on the Bay to jam all night long.  If you were one of the first registrants for this amazing weekend, you will have received an official invitation to this rocking party at the Bay Harbor Hotel.  On Friday, March 2nd, 2018, Cabana Dogs takes the big stage at MOTB from 10am-12noon.  We couldn’t be more excited to showcase our upbeat rockin, trop rockin’ style, and to have you all sing along!  Don’t miss it!

Alright, I think that’s enough for now.  Thank you for cheering me on. I love seeing you wherever I play.  I’ll see you soon, somewhere down the road!

Trop Rock world update

There’s so much going on in my Trop Rock world in the next few months that I figured I’d better get started on filling you in…

From January 23 through January 25 is the 7th Annual celebration of Fruitcakes In the Alley (FITA), held in the northern Orlando community of Altamonte Springs.  FITA is a weekend long, charity bowling/music event, which benefits Juvenile Arthritis research and treatment.  In fact, this event, which is organized and run by my PHriends in the Parrot Heads of Central Florida, has raised over $147,000 for Juvenile Arthritis since its inception.  Attendees will have the pleasure of singing along with bands and solo artists like the Trop Rock Junkies, Ronnie Tsunami and the Wave Riders, Bill Cockrell, deciBel, the Conch Fritters, Captain Josh, Jim Morris and the Big Bamboo Band, Nowhere to Rum, Jimi Pappas and, of course, yours truly!  We plan to exceed last year’s total contribution of $35,210.

Then, from February 28 through March 1 is the 4th annual celebration of Music on the Bay, held at Whiskey Joe’s Barefoot Beach Bar in Tampa. This wonderfully philanthropic event has been crowned the Trop Rock Music Association “Event of The Year” for both 2013 and 2014. Last year, Music on the Bay attendees partied with a purpose and through their generous support and gifts from their hearts raised $31,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children! The list of artists performing is impressive and long, and includes Sunny Jim, Charlie Imes, John Frinzi, Jerry Diaz and Hannah’s Reef, Highway 1, Trop Rock Junkies, Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways, The Boat Drunks, Jim Asbell and the Tropiholics, Latitude, Renn Loren, the Sauce Boss, Young Rebel Goombas, Jimmy and the Parrots, Ramajay Intercoastal, Captain Josh and Banjody, Michael J. Weiss, Jack Mosely Band, Jim Morris and the Big Bamboo Band, and of course, me again!  We’d all love to see you there!

It certainly is an honor to be included in these amazing lists of performers and to perform for such effective charitable events, and there’s more coming… But I’ll spare you the rest of the details for now, except to say that I love being a part of the Trop Rock community and truly look forward to performing every event including PHlockings at many Parrothead Club socials, Happy Hours, Birthday Parties, and yes, even Cruises to Cozumel (more to come on that in a later blog)!

The Wave 4Thanks again to the Sarasota Bay Parrot Heads for having me play their happy hour at The Wave Bar & Grill in Venice last week!

My Mom was in town from New York (she’s also a member of the club), and she couldn’t stop talking about how friendly and welcoming everyone was. So thanks to everyone who hung out with my Mom! It’s always enjoy playing trop rock for my home club and look forward to doing it again sometime soon.

The Wave 1

The venue was great! The Ramada has undergone a huge renovation, and I think everyone was really impressed. It felt like being in a boutique hotel in South Beach, not a Ramada in Venice. I definitely recommend it!

Had a great time at the Sandbox on Anna Maria Island!

Sandbox5I’m kicking back with a glass of bourbon after a hectic but amazing two weeks of gigs! Last night I played the Sandbox on Anna Maria Island, one of the most personable and enjoyable places I’ve ever played, and probably my favorite gig on the calendar each year! Good friends, loads of food, hanging out by (or in) the pool and enjoying some good trop rock. What more could you want? In true Key West style, we also break for sunset, which is always a highlight of playing at the Sandbox.

Sandbox audienceWe had a full house with PHriends from the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club, Parrot Heads of Central Florida, as well as family, neighbors and new friends.

A special thanks to Pablo and Diana for hosting me, and to Lightning Jack McGivern and Kid Conch, Rick Schettino for joining in on steel drums, guitar and percussion.

I’m going to enjoy a much-needed one-week rest, then will be back playing around Florida. Check out my Tour Dates page for a list of upcoming gigs!

Busy week of gigs coming up. Can’t wait!

If you’ve been wanting to get out to one of my trop rock gigs, the next week is your chance! This Thursday I’m playing for the Sarasota Bay Parrot Heads at Sun-n-Fun from 6-9. This is my home Parrot Head Club and a great bunch of people, so it’s always one of my favorite gigs.

Spanish Pointe Tiki Bar, Osprey, Florida

Then this weekend I’m playing at Spanish Point on Saturday (6:30-9:30) and Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle on Sunday afternoon (1-5). If you’ve never been to Spanish Point, this is the ultimate tiki bar on the water, and one of the best places to watch the sunset in Sarasota aside from the beach.

Then I’m playing at Cha Cha’s again on Wednesday from 7-11. If you come, order the fish tacos or the pulled pork sandwich — excellent!

Check my Tour Dates page for other upcoming gigs. And if you would like to book a trop rock house party, give me a call. Hope to see you soon!

Don’t miss the Parrot Head meeting this Thursday!

So I got my dates mixed up — the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club elections are not this Thursday. But I am definitely playing, so I hope you’ll come out and spend time with your favorite PHriends and enjoy some good tunes. I can’t wait to hear all your stories about the Buffett concert!

What an amazing weekend! Loved playing in Orlando, Sand Box, St. Armands Circle and Nokomis!

Wow, what a weekend! I kicked off the weekend early at the Bayside Grille in Nokomis, one of my favorite mom and pop bar and grills on the Gulf Coast, with great food and great prices. Kim and Joe are amazing — you walk in and they make you feel welcomed right away.

Schooner played for the Parrot Heads of Central Florida PHlocking -- one of his favorite events!

Schooner played for the Parrot Heads of Central Florida PHlocking — one of his favorite events!

Friday I played for the Parrot Heads of Central Florida‘s monthly PHlocking, which is one of the best Parrot Head clubs I’ve known. This is such a great group of people. Pam Hausle, el president, has such a passion for raising funds for charities that it’s inspiring to me. I always love traveling up to Orlando to play for these folks.

The next day I was up early (noon, which is early for a trop rocker) and headed up to Anna Maria Island for a gig at the Sand Box with Kid Conch (Rick Schettino) and Lightning Jack. The Sand Box was named the #1 house party venue by Beachfront Radio last year, and is one of my favorite places to play. Paul and Diana are such gracious hosts, and I’ve always had an amazing time playing there. Mark your calendar — I’m playing my annual concert at the Sand Box on August 2, so I hope you’ll come and join me!

Schooner has several dates coming up at Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle!

Then I finished up the weekend playing Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle on Lido Key just off the coast of Sarasota. All in all, the weekend definitely didn’t suck. The fact that it was 80 degrees and sunny didn’t hurt. Man, I love living in Florida!

I’m booking the spring and summer up and have  some great gigs coming up, so I hope you’ll come out and see me! Visit my Tour Dates page for a complete list of upcoming gigs. See you soon!

Meeting of the Minds

It’s that time of year Parrot Heads — time to start planning for Meeting of the Minds! It’s rumored (as it always is) that Jimmy Buffett is going to make an appearance on the main stage at the Casa Marina Saturday night, and I have it on good authority that it’s true. So set your compass toward Key West and get ready to get your trop rock on!

Looking forward to playing for Koz again at Koz's Green World Gallery in Key West -- a great supporter of Trop Rock!

I’ll be performing at The Rum Barrel, Koz’s Green World Gallery and Durty Harry’s, and am announcing new dates each week, so keep “A Weather Eye” on my tour dates page. I’ll also be releasing my second CD, Footsteps in the Sand at Meeting of the Minds.

So mark your calendar, get your lei and grass skirt ready, and join me in Key West for Meeting of the Minds. It’s one of the greatest weeks of the year for Trop Rock!

See you there!

Schooner booking summer house parties

photo-6Parrot Head Phriends, Schooner still has some summer dates available for house parties in Florida, southern Georgia, between Florida and eastern Pennsylvania in late July, and the Carolina Coast in early August.

If you’re looking for a trop rocker who can sing your favorites along with clever tunes of his own that are sure to connect with your guests, such as In Arrears Drinking Beer, Pier Pressure and Mid-Life Vices, give Schooner a call for open dates.

Voted Beachfront Radio’s 2012 Bad Boy of Trop Rock, Schooner has played top trop rock venues like Tropical Isle on Bourbon Street in New Orleans; the Sand Box, voted #1 house party venue by Beachfront Radio; Meeting of the Minds; and for Parrot Heads across the country!

Just Add Bourbon!

Just returned from the first leg of my Just Add Bourbon summer trop rock tour. Playing at Pompano Joe’s in Destin is a memorable one — perhaps the most beautiful view from the stage that I’ve ever seen, and plenty of Parrot Heads in the crowd!

Schooner played Pompano Joe's in Destin to kick off his Just Add Bourbon summer tour.

Usually that turquoise water that the Gulf of Mexico is famous for is my backdrop, but this time I got to look out over the white beach and aqua water as I played.

I then moved on to Tropical Isle in New Orleans on Bourbon Street. What a cool place! While the neon green Hand Grenades — New Orleans’ most powerful drink — were quite tempting, partaking in such a beverage and still being able to remember the words to my songs would not have been possible. Not doubt, a potential “Fool Button” episode. So I abstained…this time. A big thanks to Pam and Earl for having me! I was particularly impressed with Pam’s Hand Grenade-green Porsche , custom designed and painted to match the drink.

Big thanks also to  their manager Julie Nevius, who is a big Parrot Head. Also can’t forget the bartenders, Britney, Sasha and Paige, who clued me into the cool way the patrons sent tips and song requests to the stage through the little sucky tubes (like at the bank drive-thru, very cool!)

Make sure to stop by next time you’re in the Big Easy, and vote for Tropical Isle for Best Trop Rock Venue in the Beachfront Radio awards this year!

A special thanks to Derby City Dave, who stopped by with family and friends while in town for the Zydeco Music Festival. It was great seeing a good friend and Parrot Head extraordinaire from home.

For more summer dates on the Just Add Bourbon tour, check my tour dates page.
