Had a great time at the Sandbox on Anna Maria Island!

Sandbox5I’m kicking back with a glass of bourbon after a hectic but amazing two weeks of gigs! Last night I played the Sandbox on Anna Maria Island, one of the most personable and enjoyable places I’ve ever played, and probably my favorite gig on the calendar each year! Good friends, loads of food, hanging out by (or in) the pool and enjoying some good trop rock. What more could you want? In true Key West style, we also break for sunset, which is always a highlight of playing at the Sandbox.

Sandbox audienceWe had a full house with PHriends from the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club, Parrot Heads of Central Florida, as well as family, neighbors and new friends.

A special thanks to Pablo and Diana for hosting me, and to Lightning Jack McGivern and Kid Conch, Rick Schettino for joining in on steel drums, guitar and percussion.

I’m going to enjoy a much-needed one-week rest, then will be back playing around Florida. Check out my Tour Dates page for a list of upcoming gigs!

Booking Bonanza!

Just when I thought I could kick back and enjoy some quiet beach time, my summer season has kicked into full gear and I have quite a few gigs coming up! With only 16 days to go in July, I have 10 gigs to fit in before my August 2 performance at The Sand Box on Anna Maria Island. If you’re in the Sarasota area this month, check my tour dates calendar and stop by to see me! I’m playing some of my favorite venues in St. Armands, Siesta Key, Bradenton, Osprey and Sarasota, ranging from a Parrot Head party to some awesome beachy bars. I’m really psyched about joining up with some other trop rock musicians, and also trying out a few new venues. now-playing-tropical-isle.jpg

I’m also getting close to announcing a major festival booking that I can’t wait to announce! I can’t say anything now, but watch Facebook for the announcement.

In the meantime, stop by and see me at an upcoming event. And if you haven’t reserved your spot for the Sand Box performance on Aug. 2 on Anna Maria Island, you can register on my tour dates page. This is one of the best shows of the year that you won’t want to miss!

Don’t miss the Parrot Head meeting this Thursday!

So I got my dates mixed up — the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club elections are not this Thursday. But I am definitely playing, so I hope you’ll come out and spend time with your favorite PHriends and enjoy some good tunes. I can’t wait to hear all your stories about the Buffett concert!

What an amazing weekend! Loved playing in Orlando, Sand Box, St. Armands Circle and Nokomis!

Wow, what a weekend! I kicked off the weekend early at the Bayside Grille in Nokomis, one of my favorite mom and pop bar and grills on the Gulf Coast, with great food and great prices. Kim and Joe are amazing — you walk in and they make you feel welcomed right away.

Schooner played for the Parrot Heads of Central Florida PHlocking -- one of his favorite events!

Friday I played for the Parrot Heads of Central Florida‘s monthly PHlocking, which is one of the best Parrot Head clubs I’ve known. This is such a great group of people. Pam Hausle, el president, has such a passion for raising funds for charities that it’s inspiring to me. I always love traveling up to Orlando to play for these folks.

The next day I was up early (noon, which is early for a trop rocker) and headed up to Anna Maria Island for a gig at the Sand Box with Kid Conch (Rick Schettino) and Lightning Jack. The Sand Box was named the #1 house party venue by Beachfront Radio last year, and is one of my favorite places to play. Paul and Diana are such gracious hosts, and I’ve always had an amazing time playing there. Mark your calendar — I’m playing my annual concert at the Sand Box on August 2, so I hope you’ll come and join me!

Schooner has several dates coming up at Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle!

Then I finished up the weekend playing Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle on Lido Key just off the coast of Sarasota. All in all, the weekend definitely didn’t suck. The fact that it was 80 degrees and sunny didn’t hurt. Man, I love living in Florida!

I’m booking the spring and summer up and have  some great gigs coming up, so I hope you’ll come out and see me! Visit my Tour Dates page for a complete list of upcoming gigs. See you soon!

Schooner adds new dates in St. Armands, Osprey and Destin!

Check out Schooner’s Tour Dates, because we’ve added several new ones! We continue to announce new dates for Schooner’s Just Add Bourbon Tour — June 4 at Pompano Joe’s in Destin (one of Schooner’s favorites!) Why bourbon, you might ask? Well, aside from the fact that it’s delicious, Schooner is heading to Bourbon Street in New Orleans to play June 7 at Tropical Isle, voted #5 Trop Rock Venue by Beachfront Radio listeners. We’ll make a stop in Destin along the way.

Beach Bum it with Schooner on June 4 at Pompano Joe's in Destin.

New dates also include several spring dates for Spanish Pointe in Osprey — Tiki Bar Extraordinaire — and ChaCha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle next Tuesday night. Come out for the most excellent fish tacos in Sarasota that we’ve tried so far!

If you’re along the route from Sarasota to the Big Easy — Tampa, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Pensacola, Mobile, Pascagoula, Gulfport, Whatever — Schooner is also booking house parties. So contact him if you’re interested in booking a Trop Rock house party.

Fins Up, Parrot Heads!

Happy 2013!

As I sit on my Sarasota balcony in 75-degree sunshine listening to Beachfront Radio, it’s hard not to reflect on where I’ve been in the past year and where I hope to go in 2013.

As I’m sure can be said for all of you, 2012 saw so much change. I moved to Florida, left my good friends in the Conch Republic band (where I was the lead singer) and embarked on a solo career, put out my first CD, played Meeting of the Minds, embraced the Florida lifestyle, and said goodbye to my father. He passed away from cancer on Dec. 9 — a fate that has unfortunately followed so many of the  New York Firefighters and other first responders of 911. While this last event certainly had the most impact on me, I think all of these things changed me, mostly for the better.

While I’ve never been one to stick to New Year’s resolutions, here are a few that I am hopeful to embrace in 2013:

  1. I want to establish a scholarship fund in my father’s name, to help a needy football player with his tuition to St. Anthony’s High School in Long Island. My dad was a football coach there for many years, and he donated his salary each year to pay for a student’s tuition. I’d like to keep that tradition going, so expect to see some fundraisers and tip donations this year.
  2. After my taste of the trop rock lifestyle in 2012, I’m hungry for more.  More gigs, more tours, more collaborations with other trop rockers, another CD, and more purchases from Tommy Bahama.
  3. Getting more fishing in and spending more time napping on the beach are definitely on my list of priorities for 2013.
  4. It wouldn’t be a New Year’s resolution without admitting that I want to live healthier. We’ll see  how that goes.

Overall, 2012 was a good year. Here’s to making 2013 everything that we all hope it will be! Cheers!

My idea of a White Christmas

I took my Wharf Rats to the beach today to celebrate Christmas, after a busy morning of opening presents, checking to see if Santa ate the cookies, and eating too much monkey bread. It’s so nice to be this close to the beach. After years of dreaming, we made the move in 2012 and have never been happier. The white sands of Lido Beach off the coast of Sarasota are my idea of a White Christmas.  Merry Christmas to all of my family, friends, fans and fellow trop rockers!

Meeting of the Minds: Day 3 (a bit belated)

Let me just say that by Day 3 of Meeting of the Minds in Key West, I was so exhausted that I never got the chance to blog. Of course, the fact that I was hanging out with the Parrot Heads and my trop rock friends, and playing at Lazy Gecko until the wee hours, may have had a little to do with it…

Had a blast playing with Chris Sacks and the guys for the Sarasota Bay Parrot Heads!

Saturday was perhaps the best day of all. After relaxing on the beach at the gorgeous Casa Marina, I played for the Sarasota Bay Parrot Heads (my home club!) at the Ocean Breeze Inn. They had shots of jello, shots of concoctions that tasted like apple pie, shots Rum Jumbie…an awesome day, to say the least!

I joined some trop rock favorites on stage. Chris Sacks and his band were a blast to play with, and were definitely some guys I could hang with. They played the same kind of music I like — rockin’ trop rock. Mike Mangum sat in, cool guy; and Gary Philips joined on guitar, also a great guy; plus Duane Harlick from the Tropoholics — awesome voice, best version of Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” that I’ve heard. Lastly, John Frinzi took the stage — a charismatic guy with a great voice who apparently the girls really love! Had a blast playing and watching. Good times.

Enjoyed playing with Gary Philips at Meeting of the Minds. Great guy!

Took my family to the Southernmost Hotel Cafe for a late-afternoon lunch. My 8-year-old son and I were very pleased to know that the beach there, which the restaurant overlooks, has a bikini top-optional beach. The second pair of boobies my guy has seen so far (the first was on the jumbotron at the Cincinnati Buffett show). He seems pretty pleased with that. Wish my wife had let me take a picture to share.

Had a late night at the Lazy Gecko to play again with Chris Sacks and the boys, and hang out with John Friday and Danni Hoy (love her new CD!), then back home to Sarasota. Thank God I didn’t have to fly back up north to where it’s snowing. I don’t miss those days one bit. If my worst case scenario is Siesta Key, I’m doing pretty good in life!

The ladies in the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club loved John Frinzi.

Mid-Life Vices is Launched!

Schooner’s first solo CD is in! If you’ve ever pondered how to satisfy your Mid-Life Vices , you’ll be able to identify. Songs include In Arrears Drinking BeerThe Shit Hit the Fan and Pier Pressure, among others.

You can purchase the CD online at Beachfront Radio, during Meeting of the Minds in Key West (check the “Tour Dates” page) or purchase a hard copy via PayPal (details to come!)
You’re also invited to the official release party at Koz’s Green World Gallery on Friday, Nov. 2 at 2pm. If you’ve never been to see our friend Koz, a great supporter of trop rock, his gallery is at 712B Duval Street, just south of Angela Street. He’s just three blocks away from Schooner’s old house on the cemetery (yes, Schooner lived across the street from the Key West Cemetery), which is one of the best parts of Duval.
